My Goal Hasn’t Changed…

After learning that the A Lovely Year of Finishes linkup had closed, I was very happy to learn about the One Monthly Goal (OMG) linkup at Red Letter Quilts.  Setting a monthly goal and sharing it pushes me to finish up my project, or at least whatever stage I have set as a goal, and it’s fun to see what people do and have people come look at my work.

basted rattlesnakeMy February goal was to finish up the quilting on my Rattlesnake quilt.  A bit ambitious but not impossible.  As it proved though, more ambitious than I could manage.  So, quilting the Rattlesnake remains as my March goal.

I am getting there.  Based on all the feedback I got about the outer border, I have left the decorative quilting as is, and not tried to add anything between the rows.  Once I have finished all the quilting,  I’ll see if it needs anything else..probably not!

Outer edgeI quilted the narrow outer border with a random way lines, a simple motif that I love and that echos the lines of decorative stitches.  Then I started on the background to the rattlesnake blocks.  I’m about 2/3 done with the red.  Again, very simple quilting, but enough to make the rattlesnake portion stand out a bit more.  It’s based on the motif in the bottom left of the little practice piece I made from a Diane Gaudynski workshop, but my idea is  to quilt the red blocks in one direction and the grey in the opposite.  I’m not sure you’ll get the same effect since the blocks are so big and broken up by the piecing.  I amEdited detail Gaudynski class whole cloth 2 currently resisting the temptation to start varying the quilting in the grey blocks.  Once I have all the background bits quilted, I’ll decide if I need to do anything more with the rattlesnake portion.  I think it might just need some stitch in the ditch to make the piecing stand out, and of course my inclination is to do something in every section of the rattlesnakes..but bulk is an issue in some places and I am resisting the urge to quilt the piece to death.  For the moment.  Probably.  You can see the effect o far in the pictures below.

I’m linking this up to the OMG Goals Party and also to Let’s Bee Social.  If I can get my photos to upload and actually publish this post…Technology is not being cooperative.

P.S.  Now that I have finally started adding some FMQ, simple though it is, I am also linking up to Free Motion Mavericks.  It feels like it has been ages since I was able to do some free motion.

  1. Lovely to see you again at the linky!
Your piecing is a tour de force, with all those curved seams. I really like the uncomplicated look to the FMQ you have used so far. I think this is a quilt where the eye will be drawn by the colours and shapes rather than a busy quilting design – I hope you can fight the urge to go mad with the quilting, which I know can be difficult…!
Thank you for linking up with Free Motion Mavericks!
    Love, Muv
